An Introduction to Carbohydrates: Understanding the Basics

O que são hidratos de carbono?

I often discuss the concept of carbohydrates in my discussions and often find it necessary to explain their function and provide examples of high-carbohydrate foods.

Carbohydrates are one of the three main nutrients found in food and drink, alongside proteins and fats.

In the body, carbohydrates are converted into glucose and used to generate energy.

Understanding the Different Types of Carbohydrates

There are three types of carbohydrates: simple sugars, complex carbs, and fibers.

Simple sugars

Simple sugars, also known as monosaccharides and disaccharides, are carbohydrates that are composed of just one or two sugar molecules.

They are considered simple because they are quickly and easily broken down by the body and absorbed into the bloodstream.

Examples of simple sugars include glucose, fructose, and sucrose. These can be found in processed foods, sweets and fruit.

Complex Carbohydrates (starch)

Complex carbohydrates, also known as polysaccharides, are composed of long chains of simple sugars.

They are often referred to as “starchy” carbohydrates because they are found in starchy foods like bread, pasta, rice, and potatoes.

Unlike simple sugars, complex carbs are broken down more slowly by the body, which means they provide a slower and more sustained release of energy.

Fibers

Fiber is a type of carbohydrate that is not digested by the body. It passes through the digestive system largely unchanged and is not converted into glucose.

There are two types of fiber: soluble and insoluble.

Soluble fiber dissolves in water and can help to lower cholesterol and regulate blood sugar.

Insoluble fiber does not dissolve in water and helps to add bulk to the stool, promoting regular bowel movements.

All three types of carbohydrates are important for maintaining good health. Simple sugars should be consumed in moderation, as they can contribute to weight gain and other health problems if consumed in excess.

Complex carbs and fiber, on the other hand, are important sources of energy and can help to promote good digestion and overall health.

It is important to choose the right carbohydrates and be mindful of portion sizes in our diet.

When I refer to low-carb diets, I am advocating for a reduction in carbohydrate intake rather than complete elimination.
